The mill was an old green oak building built into a dam holding back a large mill pond. The client wished to turn the mill into a house, complete with large inside/outside swimming pool, basement gym etc etc. In doing so, much of the existing building was demolished. That which remained had to be supported whilst the ground floor was lowered. The new wing was built into the dam and necessitated the construction of a secant piled retaining wall 7m high along the existing, narrow dam crest. Ground conditions were difficult, being mostly running sand, which necessitated extensive dewatering and piled anchors to prevent uplift.
