Welch House

This award winning house is built on the coastal slope in an area prone to landslides. In this case it was decided that it would not be possible to stabilise the slope so a very strong foundation consisting of an egg shaped (on plan) group of piles was inserted into the ground and tied back with long ground anchors to provide an arrangement sufficiently strong as to allow the ground to move past it if a slip occurred. The building is supported off the foundation by means of a central core and is reached by means of a bridge. We were responsible for the initial investigation, the design of the foundation scheme and the foundation contract. The superstructure was carried out under a separate contract and designed by others.
